Looking for a tuner for your L5P Duramax? Then be prepared to wait at least for a little while because as of May 2017 there are minimal sources providing tunes. When more sources become available, rest assured that we will have the best tuning options available. Have you had a duramax tuner before? If so, let us know your favorite!
Listed below are the more popular sources for tuning on earlier duramax diesel engines(LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML)
And remember, for the latest diesel news, Intense Diesel has you covered!
Edge Products: When it comes to tuners, Edge tuners are one most mass produced options out there. With them being that large, it has led to them “playing it safe” by only pushing horsepower and torque numbers to moderate levels. These tuners are more on the safe side when it comes to tuning and often easily reversible. The downside to this type of tuning is that it doesn’t tune the truck to a “custom” tune specific for that truck. These tunes are more safe “blanket” tune that covers a wide range as opposed to one specific truck. Also, if your looking for tuning to help your duramax delete than this is not the option for you(Edge does not support or condone this type of tuning)
Banks Power: In the world of diesel performance there is a name that has been at the forefront diesel innovation for many years and that name is Banks. Started by the legendary Gale Banks, Banks Power has created tuners and programmers backed by 50 plus years of performance knowledge. In September 2017 Banks released information around their upcoming L5P tuner, the Derringer. Initially many thought that the L5P was untunable but Gale Banks knew there was a way.
The Derringer tuner was released as a OBDII access tuner that also plugins into the FRP sensor as well as the MAP sensor. Installation is somewhat easy but will take 45 minutes to an hour to complete. The end result is an additional 61 horsepower and 91 lb ft of torque. While these numbers may not be as impressive as some custom tuning options, Banks Power has created this tuner as a safe addition for your truck. Some of the main safety features of this tuner are TransCommand and ActiveSafety. TransCommand provides both improved shifting but also performance monitoring in cases of slip. The ActiveSafety system is an active failsafe mode that senses potential issues and returns the L5P Duramax to stock power.
The years of innovation behind Banks Power as well as the unique features of the Derringer tuner makes this L5P tuner a solid choice for those looking to increase their Duramax power.
PPEI: One of the biggest movers and shakers in the tuning world in the last 5 years has to be PPEI. This company, started by Kory Willis, is often referred to “Tuned by Kory Willis” often more than the company itself. Kory started tuning due to need and interest and quickly started modifying via EFILive. PPEI tunes are unique to each vehicle and provide horsepower and torque gains from mild(30hp) to wild(200hp). If your looking for custom tunes unique to your vehicle, be sure to check out one of the top names in the business, PPEI.
While many are awaiting Kory Willis L5P tuning we have received subtle hints from the Tuning Phenom. Kory will post these low key hints from time to time on his social media accounts so be sure to check those out if your looking to get the scoop on PPEI tuning.
L5P Tuning is now provided by PPEI but let me tell you, it isnt cheap. The workaround for tuning the L5P is the required unlocked PCM, available through PPEI. The PCM coupled with a few other various items equals almost $4,000! For those looking to take there L5P power to another level, then this is the option for you.
ATP Trucks: A little larger operation than PPEI, ATP still pushes the limits of duramax power. ATP was started in 2007 by Rob Coddens aka “Idaho Rob” and has grown to what it is today purely by the love for horsepower. Rob’s company is often referred to as “tuned by Idaho Rob” because of his vast knowledge of the tuning program he uses(EFILive) in the industry he is considered a top duramax tuner. Although they’re capabilities are vast, direct numbers(HP & Torque) are not listed on their site. So if your looking to get some custom tunes from someone with extreme duramax tuning knowledge then be sure to check out ATP Trucks.
ATP TRUCKS UPDATE: ATP Trucks has since removed themselves from the “delete” diesel tuning arena after issues with the EPA. They still offer tuning but seem to be removing themselves from it to some degree.
