With each approaching year most truck fans anxiously await the upcoming new model year of their beloved brands. Needless to say these new model year vehicles are often hit with an assortment of expressions whether it be good, bad or indifferent. The frustrations for lack of upgrades or minimal redesign are probably most common. Today we will be going over our expectations, our likes and dislikes for the 2019 Duramax.
More Than One 2019 Duramax?
With a total of four duramax engines available for the 2019 model year trucks picking one will come down to application. For the first time ever GM will have a Duramax option in their Mid Size Trucks(Colorado and Canyon), Light Duty Trucks(Silverado and Sierra), Heavy Duty Trucks(2500 and 3500 Silverado/Sierra) and the Chassis Cab(4500, 5500 & 6500).
We will briefly discuss all the Duramax variations and then dive deeper into the most common Duramax, the 6.6L L5P!
2019 2.8L LWN Duramax Diesel
The smallest engine of the Duramax pack is the 2.8L 4 cylinder found only in the mid size truck segment(but also available for Savana and Express vans but this is article is truck focused). Although it is the smallest engine it sure does pack a punch with 369 lb-ft of torque and 181 horsepower. This Duramax will suit the needs of those looking to tow light to moderate loads, a more maneuverable truck and fuel mileage rated at 30 mpg.
Customer response to the 2.8L Duramax has been good from what I have seen. Remarks about the impressive torque, short turbo lag and great fuel mileage(for a truck) have been the most frequent comments.
2019 3.0L Duramax Diesel
Probably the most anticipated Duramax of the year is the 3.0L Duramax. After releases of diesel engines from their competitors GM is finally releasing their light duty diesel. The first mention of this engine was well received by the GM loyal and should prove to be a popular choice. GM has stated the engine will put down more power than both Ford and Dodges half ton diesels(Ford’s diesel option puts down 250HP & 440 FT LB Dodge is 240 HP & 420 FT LB). At the moment GM has yet to release exact power numbers but we will update as soon as that information becomes available. It has been stated that it will be a 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder mated to a 10 speed automatic transmission.
2019 6.6L Duramax – Chassis Cab Variant
For the first time in almost 10 years GM is making available a chassis cab or medium duty truck all new for 2019. This truck will be exclusively outfitted with a 6.6L Duramax option. The duramax found in this truck will feature 350 horsepower and 700 lb ft of torque. Although it has the same displacement as the duramax found in the heavy duty trucks they are quite different when it comes to power. But don’t let the lower power figures fool you, these medium duty trucks will be beast. With the ability to tow up to
