GM Steps Up Their Diesel Game
The day that many of us have been waiting for has finally arrived, the announcement of the brand new Duramax L5P. With much anticipation for new trucks as well as hopes of an upgraded engine the GM loyal have received at least half of what they were hoping for. Pictures of the updated truck first showed up around June 2016 and from the looks of the exterior not much had changed. With an updated functional Ram Air hood and a few other subtle changes neither the Sierra HD or the Silverado HD saw much styling changes.
An Updated Duramax? Tell Me More…
With the last Duramax update appearing in 2011 with the LML, GM used this engine till the 2016 model year. The LML Duramax power was an impressive 397 HP @ 3000 RPM and 765 lb ft @ 1600 RPM. With the opportunity for GM to overtake both Dodge and Ford’s latest diesel offerings GM delivered an impressive 910 lb ft @ 1600 rpm and 445 hp @ 2800 rpm with their new L5P Duramax. GM reportadly changed 90 percent of the beloved engine from a larger turbo to new cylinder heads, pistons, piston pins, connecting rods, and crankshaft, which have all been upgraded to handle 20 percent higher cylinder pressures. So is it possible that this will be the greatest duramax to date, only time will tell. Many will argue that earlier editions of the duramax were better because of the absence of the strict emission guidelines. Either way, with the release of the new stats its only a matter of time before the trucks make their way into the driveways of consumers and that will prove to be the ultimate test.

Duramax L5P Tuners?
As many of you know, modifying a diesel engine has become an almost expected addition. With the current wide selection of tuners and custom tuning on the market the question we now have is “Whats the best duramax lp5 tuning?”. Well at this point we haven’t currently seen or heard any talk concerning custom tuning or tuners but I’m sure the top tuners in the industry are already lining up for their opportunity to get their hands on one.
How does the L5P Duramax compare to Power Stroke and Cummins?
The biggest update of the the 2017 model year Duramax is by far the updates under the hood. With the ongoing battle of the trucks among the big three manufacturers(Ford, Dodge and GM) for top power and torque ratings, it was now GM’s turn to flex it’s engineering abilities. With Dodge being the first to reach for the 1000 ft lb mark, the 2016 Ram 2500 set the mark to beat at 900 ft lbs. Next up was Ford with their brand new 2017 Super Duty sporting 925 ft lbs now overtaking Dodge. The last to bring their updated engine to the public was GM with their 2017 Silverado Duramax and the 2017 Sierra Duramax offering 910 ft lbs of torque. Rest assured though, this battle of torque is far from over and numbers at or above 1000 are only a short time away.
Many of you are interested strictly in the torque numbers but there is also a great portion also interested in the horsepower as well. Starting from the lower end, Dodge takes third when it comes to horsepower output at 385 hp. Coming in at second is the 2017 Power Stroke with 440 hp. Taking the top spot on the list is the 2017 Duramax LP5 with 445 hp, barely passing Ford.
Can I see the new Duramax in action?
While there has been limited sightings and access at this point(Early October 2016) a few lucky individuals and select companies have had the privileged opportunity. Below you will find a few of the first videos of the new Duramax L5P in action.
Article Update: L5P Duramax Thoughts So Far
Here in this section we will give our extended overview for the Duramax L5P. As with all vehicles this engine variation found in Silverado and Sierra heavy duty trucks will be bought and sold for many years to come. We will notate common L5P problems, L5P user experiences, L5P tips and more.
May 2018 Update – Dominating Performance
Since the initial announcement of the L5P Duramax we have experienced many customer reviews as well as comparisons. Having spoken with numerous owners of the new duramax the feedback so far has been great. Owners are for the most part blown away by the factory power that is a very noticeable increase from the LML Duramax.
Speaking of performance, there is a absence of performance upgrade options for this new duramax. Coming up on 2 years since the release of the L5P there are minimal offerings in the l5p tuning arena. My best guess for the lack of offerings is customer demand is not as high due to manufactures warranty and government crackdowns on tuning companies. Rumors have swirled that GM has made the L5P ECU uncrackable which will make deleting emission components almost impossible. So for now, it looks as if the L5P will remain in factory form for the foreseeable future.
